The SAS Neuro-Sensory Activation Method
Recent research in how the brain functions has made it possible to develop the SAS method which is now being researched and implemented in schools in the U.K. and by families throughout the world. In Turkey there are two dedicated Centres that are being personally supervised by the developers of the SAS method. Further Centres and Practitioners operate in the U.K. and Australia.
The method uses music and sounds through headphones as a tool to reach and activate each individual brain-half. As sounds from the right ear go to the left brain-half and sounds from the left ear go to the right brain-half, we can control which side of the brain is activated. By moving the sound around and by altering the timing and tone, we can now train the brain to process faster, improve communication and synchronisation between the two sides and achieve a better overall balance in how the brain performs.
For the client the process is simple and entirely safe. Just by listening each day to the specially processed music through headphones the brain has no other option but to start processing faster. By doing this for a number of weeks the brain establishes a new, lasting habit of processing better. Many learning difficulties such as attention and concentration, reading, writing and speech, and behavioural issues are all related to how well we use our two brain-halves. That is why this new method is so exciting as it can help children and adults with a wide range of difficulties.
The SAS Neuro-Sensory Activation method is uniquely able to be tailored to the needs of the client with a choice of different levels of activation intensity, a range of breathing rates and brainwave levels, activation or relaxation music sequences, plus graduated programmes that introduce different elements in a programmed sequence over the duration of a session. The normal procedure is to gradually increase the difficulty of the programme during the first sessions in order to establish at which level and with which combination of activation methods the client responds best. In addition to music, we also use speech programmes to improve language processing and recorded NLP programmes to build confidence and self-esteem.
A typical SAS Neuro-Sensory Activation programme is designed to:
- Activate the auditory processing centres in the brain with the aim to improve the ability to recognise, filter and process sound and speech input, leading to less sensory overload, faster understanding, better verbal expression and improved reading and writing.
- Activate the other sensory processing centres in the brain (vision, touch, smell and taste) with the aim to reduce sensory overload and improve overall functioning.
- Activate the balance (vestibular) system with the aim to improve balance, proprioception, fine and gross motor skills and visual tracking.
- Promote right-ear dominance with the aim to improve speech recognition, faster understanding and better verbal expression.
- Promote inter-hemispheric integration with the aim to speed up processing in the brain, leading to better understanding and improved overall functioning.
- Change breathing rhythms with the aim to relax or activate the client and change brainwave habits that can be the underlying cause of attention deficit, hyperactivity and speech difficulties such as stuttering.
- Change belief systems with the aim to build self-esteem, confidence and motivation.
