Autism is a brain development disorder characterised by limited social interaction, no or limited speech communication and by restricted and repetitive behaviour. Mostly the condition becomes apparent before the age of three and it is more prevalent in boys than in girls. Often children with autism display unusual sensitivities in one or more of the senses: hearing, vision, touch, smell or taste.

Although the causes of Autism are still not fully understood, a number of cognitive, behavioural and sensory intervention techniques have been developed that can help minimise some of the day-to-day symptoms of autistic behaviour and many children are able to develop further with specialist help.

Children that do not start to speak around the age of two or that suddenly regress in their speech, need specialist help to encourage them to start speaking. Although speech is the ultimate aim, this may require a number of preparatory steps prior to progressing to a speech specific programme. Improvements in attention, eye contact and social skills may all help in preparing the child to take the final step towards acquiring speech. Children that very much live 'in their own world' or that have a strong need to control their environment, will also need to be helped in these areas first. A child that has lived without speech for some time often lacks to need to start speaking as it has learned to operate well enough without speech and has all his basic needs met by the parents. In these cases the child needs to be provided with sufficient motivation to try to speak.

Sensory Activation Solutions specialises in programmes that encourage a child to acquire speech. This may involve preparatory work to improve attention, social contact and motivation followed by a programme of specially altered music and speech input. Each programme is designed around the needs and abilities of the child and is aimed at helping the child to start speaking.

The five senses – hearing, vision, touch, smell and taste – plus our sense of balance and where our body is in the space around us (proprioception) all contribute to how we learn and develop. How the brain receives, filters, processes and interprets the signals from these senses determines how we perceive reality and how we react, behave and express ourselves. The SAS methods are specifically designed to strengthen sensory processing and improve inter-hemispheric synchronisation and communication. The structured training and coaching programmes improve speech & pronunciation, reading & writing, attention & understanding and lead to better behavioural, social and emotional expression.

Client Feedback - Autistic Spectrum Disorder

All clients are requested to complete a post programme questionnaire, evaluating progress in 27 different categories by indicating:

  • Great Improvement = +100 score;
  • Good Improvement = +67 score;
  • Some Improvement = +33 score;
  • No Change = 0 score;
  • Deterioration = -100 score;
  • Not Applicable = not scored.

The aggregated scores will be on a scale from "-100" (all Deteriorate) through "0" (average No Change) to "+100" (all Great Improvement). All positive scores indicate an improvement.

The average scores of the most relevant 10 categories are listed for clients with Asperger's Syndrome / Autistic Spectrum Disorder / Developmental Delay, highest score first. All 27 categories show positive (improvement) results.
